What is Bakeru GoG?

Bakeru means “to become” or “to turn into a ghost”. That’s the game. Developed by Nakagawa Studios, the weird horror game guys. Bakeru is 3rd person horror adventure set in a small Japanese village where the characters in the story will encounter strange creatures and ghosts.

My First Impression: Setting and Story

Story

The game starts in the mysterious Japanese village of Yami no Saka (The Edge of Darkness) where your character Akira Takahashi has come to find his missing sister. The village is empty but strange shadows are felt everywhere. The stories of the village say that some “Bakeru” live here and hunt down ordinary humans and capture their souls.

First Step: Surprise and Fear

When I entered the first path of the village, it was foggy. As I walked further, a voice came from the trees. The voice was very soft, like someone calling for help. I turned around but there was nothing. That was the moment I knew this game was going to get to me emotionally and mentally.

Bakeru Switch Gameplay: Horror and Strategy

Survival Horror

Bakeru’s gameplay is based on the classic survival horror but with a twist of Japanese horror movies. You have limited resources: a lantern, a dagger and a few amulets. The enemies, called “Bakeru”, are very clever and deadly. They scare you mentally rather than physically attacking you.

The changing environment

The environment in the game is changing. I hid in a small house in the village but as soon as I entered the room the furniture started moving on its own. There was a mirror which didn’t have my reflection but as I approached it a ghost appeared inside the mirror.

Puzzles and mysteries

The game is not just about running or fighting but you have to solve puzzles to unlock the secrets of the village. In one puzzle I had to hit the right notes on an old drum to open a hidden door. Elsewhere I had to find words in an old book that could weaken Bakeru.

Enemies: Bakeru

Bakeru’s enemies are not your typical ghost or creature of a horror game. They can turn into people you know. I saw my sister for a second in a room, but when I got closer she turned into a Bakeru on steam. Their movements, sounds and attacks are creepy.

Graphics and Sound Design

Graphics: A Lovely Horror World

The graphics are great. Fog, shadows and lighting makes the environment eerie. Village trees, ancient buildings and mummified statues all feels real.

Sound Design: The Fear Source

Silence also talks in this game. Even when nothing is happening, the slightest whisper or the sound of footsteps in the environment will make you feel uneasy. My heart beating faster as the enemy approached was confusing me between reality and the game.

Memorable Moments

1. Shura Hall

I entered an ancient temple and found a mysterious hall where the souls of the villagers were trapped. Bakeru tried to trap me but I escaped using an amulet.

2. The village story revealed

At the end of the game I found out the village was once prosperous but a curse ruined it. This was emotional and connected all the story dots.
